1. Choose the Right Box

  • Size: Select a box size appropriate for what you’re packing. Heavy items (like books) should go in smaller boxes, while lighter items (like linens) can go in larger boxes.
  • Condition: Make sure the box is sturdy, not worn, and has no weak spots. Reinforce the bottom with extra tape if needed.

2. Gather Packing Materials

  • Packing tape: High-quality, wide packing tape for sealing.
  • Cushioning materials: Bubble wrap, packing paper, foam peanuts, or old newspapers.
  • Dividers: For fragile items like glassware, consider dividers or extra padding.
  • Labels: To clearly mark what’s inside and if it’s fragile.

3. Prep the Box

  • Tape the seams of the box’s bottom with packing tape, ideally using a double layer for extra security.
  • Line the bottom of the box with a layer of padding, such as crumpled paper or bubble wrap, for shock absorption.

4. Pack Heaviest Items First

  • Place the heavier items at the bottom of the box to create a stable base.
  • Wrap each item in packing paper or bubble wrap if they’re fragile.
  • Make sure there’s no empty space between the heavier items.

5. Fill in with Lighter Items

  • Add lighter items on top of the heavier base.
  • Use bubble wrap or paper to fill any gaps between items to prevent shifting.
  • For fragile items, add more cushioning between each piece. Stack plates vertically and wrap glass items individually.

6. Don’t Overfill or Underfill

  • Avoid overfilling to prevent the box from bulging or splitting.
  • Underfilled boxes are also problematic, as items can shift inside and cause damage. Use extra padding to fill any empty space.

7. Close and Seal the Box

  • Once filled, press down gently to see if there’s any wiggle room. Add more packing material if needed.
  • Seal the top of the box with tape using the same double-tape method as the bottom.

8. Label the Box

  • Mark the box with its contents and destination room (e.g., “Kitchen – Plates”).
  • If the box contains fragile items, clearly label it as “FRAGILE” and indicate which side should remain upright.
